Draghi puts Salvini, Meloni and Conte in line and excludes his second term at Palazzo Chigi

The prime minister rules out a second mandate at Palazzo Chigi but strictly dismisses Salvini for his pro-Russian ambiguity, Meloni for her attacks on the EU and the France-Germany axis, and Conte for his somersaults on sending arms to Ukraine

Draghi puts Salvini, Meloni and Conte in line and excludes his second term at Palazzo Chigi

Prime Minister Mario Draghi he didn't really say it in the press conference that followed yesterday's Council of Ministers and he dryly lambasted the sovereignists and populists, both the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, that the leader of the Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Melons and, nevertheless, the leader of the Five Stars, Giuseppe Conte.

Draghi immediately went to the point: “There is the one who loves i succeeded crazy and wants to lift the sanctions, which are working instead, and talks secretly to them every day: but the majority of Italians don't do it and don't want to do it". He did not mention names and surnames but everyone understood that the prime minister was referring to Salvini who he then explicitly named when he said: "I don't agree with Salvini when he attacks the sanctions".

DRAGHI ATTACKS SALVINI'S PRO-RUSSIAN AMBIGUITIES BUT ALSO MELONI'S ANTI-EU LINE

But Draghi's most unexpected blow was addressed to Meloni when faced with a question about the pro vote Orban of the League and of the Brothers of Italy in the European Parliament: “We have a certain vision of Europe and – said Draghi – we defend the rule of law. We are allies to Germany and France. I don't know what the next government will do, but I wonder: how does one choose partners? Of course, there is an ideological commonality, but also based on the interests of the Italians. Who are these partners? Who matters most among these partners? Give yourself the answers”. Draghi's critical reference was to Meloni's sovereignist thrusts against the EU ("With me in Europe the free ride is over") and against the France-Germany axis in favor of Orban.

DRAGHI WILL NOT SAVE COUNT: "YOU CANNOT VOTE TO SEND WEAPONS TO UKRAINE AND THEN SAY AGAINST"

But, even without naming him, there is also some for the leader of the Five Stars, Giuseppe With you. Draghi says: “You cannot vote to send weapons to Ukraine and then say I don't agree. Or, worse, to be proud of the Ukrainian advance after being against the sending of arms. You wanted theUkraine defended himself with his bare hands?”

Then the final jab for the three populist leaders: “In international relations – claims the premier – we need to be transparent. It takes consistency in positions, not reversals or twists and turns. This makes a country's prestige abroad. Italy weakens without it”.

It could not have been clearer than that Mario Draghi who however dryly ruled out his second term at the helm of the government. But in the midst of the electoral campaign and without having run for office, he could not say otherwise. We'll see.

  1. I absolutely and completely agree with the article. Characters such as Salvini and Conte meloni (deliberately written without capital letters) are careerists, populists and even boorish. I hope you
elections put them back into the minority and then make them disappear.
