Thursday of summit meetings today in Europe. ECB President Mario Draghi will visit Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin and it will be an opportunity to strengthen the axis that has made it possible to defend the euro and guarantee autonomy to the Central Bank even with respect to the German hawks – Premier Gentiloni will instead received by Theresa May and Brexit will be the focus of the talks

Draghi from Merkel, Gentiloni from May: euro and Europe against Brexit and populism

The defense of the euro and the relaunch of Europe against Brexit and all populisms, internal and external to the Old Continent. This will be the leitmotif of the double meeting at the top of Europe which will take place today in Berlin and London.

In the German capital, the meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel, who remains the favorite in the next general elections even if she has to deal with the growing popularity of the social democratic candidate Schulz, and the president of the ECB, Mario Draghi, will be an opportunity to strengthen the axis it has so far made it possible to defend the euro through the autonomy of the Central Bank and to support Europe in the face of all populisms (from Trump to Le Pen) and the risks of disintegration of the EU after Brexit. Draghi, who has repeatedly cornered the German hawks (from Schaeuble to the Bundesbank) also thanks to the Chancellor's silent assent, which made the launch of QE possible, was moreover peremptory the other day when he said that , European treaties in hand, “the euro is irrevocable”.

The other summit today in London will be anything but routine, where Prime Minister Theresa May will receive the Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, who will try to better understand the British road map towards Brexit, which has so far appeared rather obscure, the day after of the vote in the House of Commons which authorizes May herself to negotiate with Brussels on leaving the European Union. Gentiloni, in diplomatic but clear tones, will make May understand that London cannot expect discounts on the single market after slamming the door and that the threat of creating a Hong Kong model tax haven is an unloaded gun if there is no more behind it Europe. But our prime minister will also ask for guarantees for Italians who live, study or work in England.
