Draghi in Berlin from Merkel: "We will have to help each other on migrants"

“We have close views on the external dimension of migration, which means a greater presence of the EU in Africa: not only in Libya and Tunisia, but also in Sael, Mali, Ethiopia, Eritrea. THE Departure countries. The EU needs to be heard more in this part of the world”. These are the words of the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, at the press conference in Berlin following the bilateral summit with the chancellor Angela Merkel. The meeting – the last with the current head of the German government, whose mandate is about to expire – was an opportunity to take stock of the issue of migration in view of the next European Council.

The point on which the visions of the two countries are least convergent is that which concerns i reallocation mechanisms, being Italy a landing country and Germany the main destination for secondary movements of migrants. However, Draghi assured that even on this point "there is discussion: it will take time, but there is the will to arrive at a joint solution and one that is mutually beneficial".

The chancellor took the same line: "In the discussions we've had there have been very few differences of opinion," she assured.

For Libya, “we support what is called the Berlin process – confirmed the Prime Minister – which should see greater commitment in that area by the entire European Union, not just by individual countries. A common investment not only to curb illegal immigration, but also to regularize legal immigration and help these countries find peace again”.

Finally, on the Turkey, the chancellor said that it is necessary to "open a perspective on the future" of relations between the European Union and Ankara, because it is a country that "welcomes many refugees, over three million. We cannot go forward without cooperation with Turkey. We will also talk about this at the European Council”.

Football was also discussed at the summit because Prime Minister Draghi proposed to Chancellor Merkel to evaluate moving the final of the European Championships from London, where the Delta variant of Covid is raging, to another European capital, offering the availability of Rome
