Women entrepreneurs: the under 35s are the most active

It is women under 35 who strongly support the growth of Italian female entrepreneurship. According to the Unioncamere and Infocamere observatory, in the first quarter of 2021 new companies founded by women under 35 increased by 8,1% compared to the same period last year. Among the different age groups, this is by far the most positive figure.

After the fall in the overall registrations of new businesses led by women recorded throughout 2020, the main indicator of entrepreneurial vitality returns to a slight increase in the first quarter of 2021: 26.299 women's businesses were born between January and last March, against 26.044 in the same period a year ago, the lowest figure since 2015.

Although still well below past performance, the 1% growth compared to January-March 2020 therefore marks a first turning point compared to previous quarters, even if we are still far from the values of previous years.

“Women continue to pay a higher price than men for the crisis induced by the pandemic – reads the analysis – Even in the first quarter of this year, in fact, the percentage increase in new businesses led by women continues to be much lower to that of men's businesses (1% compared to 9,5%)”.

At the end of March, female businesses exceeded one million and 330 thousand, equal to 21,97% of the total of the national production system. Lombardy, Lazio, Campania and Sicily are the regions in which the largest number of businesses led by women are concentrated. Molise, Basilicata and Abruzzo those in which, on the other hand, the weight of female entrepreneurs is greater and equal to over a quarter of the total existing businesses.
