Dividends May 24, yields and coupons of the Ftse Mib: it's dividend day

The dividends of May 24th are coming. Monday in Piazza Affari will be the dividend day. The most awaited day of the year for shareholders who will finally see their hard work, loyalty and investment rewarded. They will be 18 Ftse Mib companies that will detach the coupon Monday, including some big names in the banking sector such as Intesa Sanpaolo and giants of the caliber of Generali and Eni.

According to calculations by Intermonte Sim, they will be distributed on Monday 24 May dividends for a total of 5 billion euros, a figure that adds to the 2,8 billion already disbursed in April. And that's not all, given that by the end of the year, thanks to the payment of the coupons valid on the 2019 profits (blocked due to the crisis), but also to an advance on the profits accrued in 2021, a total of 17,3 billion euros, with average returns of 3,5%. Compared to last year, when the economic difficulties triggered by the outbreak of the pandemic put listed companies to the test, there will be 4,3 billion more on the plate. 

DIVIDENDS MAY 24: THE HIGHEST COUPONS

In reference to the size of the dividend, this year to stand out on the Ftse Eb is the dividend of Generali which, together with General Bank (3,3 euros per share in two tranches), in 2021 it pays the highest dividend (but watch out for Intesa, we'll talk about it shortly). On 24 May, the company led by Philippe Donnet will distribute 1,01 euros per share to shareholders, to which a further 46 cents will be added in October. In total, on the profits accrued in 2020, Generali will distribute a coupon of 1,47 euros per share. 

Among the most generous companies, as per tradition, there is also Azimuth, which however compared to the pre-Covid years has reduced the size of the dividend. Shareholders will have to "make do" with 1 euro for each share held. Same amount for Diasorin, while Recordati set an amount of 1,05 euro per share (0,5 euro already paid in advance in November 2020). 

DIVIDENDS MAY 24: THE HIGHEST YIELDS OF THE FTSE MIB

The highest yield among the 18 companies listed on the Ftse Mib that will detach the coupon on May 24 will be that of Generali which, according to the calculations updated to 14 May, will guarantee its shareholders a yield of 5,73% on the advance payment of 1,01 euro per share. Another insurance group follows suit: Unipol, with a yield of 5,71% on a coupon of 28 cents per share. 

Above 5% we also find Italgas (at 5,02% to be exact). Rich returns too for Azimuth (yield of 4,77% on a coupon of 1 euro) e A2a (4,68% on a dividend of €0,08 per share). 

DIVIDENDS 2021: INTESA AND THE OTHER BANKS

We need to make a premise about banks. After last year's stop imposed by the European Central Bank, this year the banking institutions can return to detach the coupon, but they must still comply stringent stakes. In detail, the Eurotower has recommended the distribution of dividends up to a maximum of 15% of the cumulative profits between 2019 and 2020. Furthermore, the threshold of 20 basis points of Cet1 capital cannot be exceeded.

Based on these indications Intesa Sanpaolo on 24 May it will distribute a coupon of 0,0357 euros, the maximum allowed by the ECB, for a total amount of 693,67 million euros. Comparing the unit amount to the reference price of the security recorded on 14 May last, a yield of 1,49% is obtained. 

For the bank led by Carlo Messina, however, the best is yet to come. In fact, the Agreement provides for a cash distribution from reserves for 10 cents per share, with a yield of 5% on 2020 earnings. We should also add, this time on 2021 earnings, a further coupon with a pay-out equal to 70% of the net profit. A portion of this coupon will be distributed by the end of 2021 in the form of a down payment. By adding up the various payments, therefore, Intesa Sanpaolo becomes de jure the dividend queen of 2021. 

PRACTICAL ADVICE

To shareholders impatient to enjoy coupons and returns, we remind you that in order to receive the dividend, the company's stock must be kept in the portfolio until the stock exchanges close on the last working day prior to the ex-dividend date. For the May 24th dividend day, the securities must be held until the close of Friday May 21st.
