At the beginning 2022 dividend season there is still more than a month to go, but it is already time for shareholders to do some calculations and, perhaps, tweak their portfolio a bit to make room for the shares that guarantee the most attractive coupons. 

Today, Tuesday 1 March, Intesa Sanpaolo and Unicredit communicated details on the 2022 dividends (on 2021 profits) that will be paid in the coming months and, in both cases, shareholders will have something to rejoice about.

Here are all the details on the amount, yield and payment date of the 2022 dividends of Intesa Sanpaolo and Unicredit.

Intesa Sanpaolo 2022 dividend: 1,5 billion to shareholders

The board of Intesa Sanpaolo today approved the budget 2021, closed as known with a net profit of 4,19 billion euros, up 27,7% compared to the 3,28 billion of the previous year. At the same time, the board confirmed the balance of the cash dividend of 1,53 billion euros in total which will have to be approved by the shareholders' meeting on April 29. The balance of the dividend per share is therefore equal to 0,0789 euro, The dividend yield, calculated on the closing price of the shares on 28 February (2,29 euro) is equal to 3,4%. The coupon will be detached on May 23, 2022, with payment scheduled for May 25. 

In this context it must be considered that on November 22, 2022 Intesa Sanpaolo has detached a down payment on the dividend of 0,821 euro per share. The total amount of the coupon on 2021 earnings is therefore 0,151 euro per share, for a total return of 6,5%. On 2020 profits, the total coupon was equal to 0,1353 euro.

The buyback and the Intesa Sanpaolo business plan

In addition to the details on the 2022 dividend, the Intesa Sanpaolo board of directors has proposed a buyback to be launched in 2022 for a value of 3,4 billion euros. The times and methods for the repurchase of the shares will be communicated within the time limits established by the law. Overall, adding the dividend balance and the buyback, 4,9 billion euros will reach the shareholders' pockets.

Finally, as part of the 2022-2025 business plan, the board of the bank led by Carlo Messina has envisaged the distribution of over 22 billion euros over the next three years, of which over 6,6 billion in 2022 between advances, balances and share repurchase. 

Dividend 2022 Unicredit: surprise on the upside after the buyback

A positive surprise for the shareholders came in the morning from the Unicredit board of directors. In less than three months, the bank led by Andrea Orcel concluded the treasury share purchase program which brought 2,18% of the capital into the portfolio, against an investment of 651 million euro. 

Following the completion of the buyback programme, Unicredit has decided to increase the dividend with respect to the provisional indication provided last February 15th. The coupon amount on the profits 2021 so it goes up from €0,5352 to €0,5380 per share. The total amount of dividends that the company proposes to the shareholders' meeting to distribute is equal to 1,170 billion. The yield, calculated on the closing price of 28 February, is equal to 4,7%.

The coupon will be detached on Tuesday 19 April 2022 and paid on Thursday 21 April.
