Unemployment still falling but inactive people on the rise. This is the latest photograph taken by Istat on unemployment-employment in Italy. THEThe unemployment rate reached its lowest level since August 2012 at the end of last year. In fact, in December the rate fell to 10,8% from 10,9% of the previous month, reviewed by 11%.

The unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group, i.e the incidence of unemployed young people on the total number of those employed or looking for work rises to 32,2% (lowest since January 2012) from 32,4% (revised) in November.

“The estimate of job seekers in December decreases for the fifth consecutive month (-1,7%, -47.000). The decrease in unemployment affects women and men and is distributed among all age groups with the exception of 25-34 year olds”, comments Istat.

The employment rate drops to 58% from 58,2% (revised) the month before.

In December 2017, after the growth of the previous month, the estimate of employed people decreased by 0,3%, equal to -66 thousand units compared to November, returning to the level of October. On an annual basis, on the other hand, the increase in employed persons (+0,8%) equal to +173 thousand is confirmed. But the annual growth is concentrated among fixed-term workers (+303) while the self-employed are decreasing (-105) and to a lesser extent the permanent ones (-25).

In December 2017, after the decrease recorded in the previous month, the estimate of inactive people between the ages of 15 and 64 grew by 0,8%, ie +112 thousand. Istat communicates it, explaining that the increase affects both women and men and all age groups. The inactivity rate thus rises to 34,8% (+0,3 percentage points compared to November).
