Discourse on the left: a new humanism to reconstruct an idea of the future. A book by Ferruccio Capelli

We are pleased to offer Firstonline readers an extract from the introduction to the book of the latest work by Ferruccio Capelli, director of the House of culture of Milan and professor of "Public communication" at the Bicocca University of Milan. From an early age, Capelli lived with passion the political commitment to the left also making the troubled path from the PCI to the PD.
In this book "To the left with a human gaze", published by Guerini, which is a summa of his vision of the world and of policy, Hair outlines the main times that should nourish the action of the left.

SPEECH TO THE LEFT: TO OPEN ANOTHER ROAD

In Capelli's book it is underlined that there are already many ideas and many projects in circulation that go in this direction. That there are also many active and engaged forces. What is hard to glimpse is the narration of an overall project that allows to feed and support an effort of this magnitude. The horizon of a renewed humanism it could become a valuable motivation for those who are committed to rebuilding an idea of the future. A proposal that helps to unite, finalize and give an overall meaning to many efforts already underway.
Bringing economic growth, development, in other words capitalism back under the guidance and direction of human beings, to build a new balance with nature and a renewed cohesion in society: this is the purpose of this battle of ideas.

SPEECH ON THE LEFT: THE IDEAS OF THE TEAM OF THE HOUSE OF CULTURE IN MILAN

It is a question, as can also be deduced from these first considerations, of a rather demanding analysis and planning effort.
I ventured into this path because I have the good fortune to interact day by day with the vast circle of scholars that animates the Casa della Cultura in Milan.
The ancient center of Milanese progressive thought, of which I have been director for over twenty years, founded in the immediate post-war period and protagonist of Milanese cultural life in many and different seasons, today brings together a network of scholars from the most diverse disciplines. The daily interaction of so many voices has been the stimulus for me to outline an overall picture of the contemporary crisis and to sketch a possible narrative with which to face it.
The discussion in the Casa della Cultura seeks to foster the construction and dissemination of critical thinking. On the contrary, as we said in a moment of reckless optimism, we propose to outline, through our daily research and discussion activity, a critical encyclopaedia of the contemporary world.
It is within this daily confrontation that the reflections and stimuli that led to the writing of this book have matured. Even if, of course, the responsibility for each single revision and for the overall theses proposed here rests with the author.
