Serie A TV rights: Dazn wins on Sky for the three-year period 2021-24

The Lega assembly voted to assign television rights for the three-year period 2021-2024: an epochal revolution, with Dazn-Tim offering 840 million and Sky perhaps will have 3 games per day (co-exclusive).

Serie A TV rights: Dazn wins on Sky for the three-year period 2021-24

After weeks of stalemate, here is the epochal turning point. After 18 years of almost monopoly by Sky, which has uninterruptedly owned the rights exclusively or for most of the matches, today the assembly of the Serie A League voted on the assignment of television rights for the next three years (2021- 2024, therefore starting this summer) and it is official that the offer from Dazn (and Tim) will win. Dazn, which is already visible today on a Sky channel (but still by subscribing on the platform, even if the cost of the subscription is included, with an addition, in that of Sky for those who choose this formula), has put 840 million on the plate euros for the 10 matches of each day of the championship, thanks also to the partnership with Tim, who in addition to technological support (Dazn is a 100% streaming platform) contributes financially to the offer with a share of 340 million.

Dazn's proposal is divided into 740 million a year for the 7 matches per day on each platform (package 1) and 100 million for the remaining 3 only on the streaming platform (package 3, which is the one currently owned by the British broadcaster) . Sky's offer was 90 million lower, though the incumbent will not be cut out of the game altogether: in the meantime, the rights once acquired can be the subject of subsequent agreements, and then several club presidents are insisting that three games per day end up on Sky right away (not exclusively, they would still go on Dazn), the so-called package 2 , which would prevent Dazn from violating the "no single buyer rule" (the rule that prevents a single operator from buying all the packages) and at the same time would allow it to collect an additional 70 million. A decision is made by Monday 29 March and in this case the total to be divided among the 20 clubs would therefore rise to 910 million, a good jackpot even if lower than the theoretical minimum set by the League, equal to 1,15 billion.

The Dazn-Tim formula (+ 3 possible co-exclusive matches on Sky) thus convinced the majority of clubs. To assign TV rights 16 out of 20 companies voted in favour, only Genoa, Sampdoria, Sassuolo and Crotone were against.
