PDL resignation, Napolitano: a "sudden and disturbing" decision

The Head of State wrote a letter to justify his absence from a conference, explaining that yesterday "a politically sudden and institutionally disturbing fact" occurred: the threat of resignation en bloc of the Pdl in the event that Palazzo Madama sanctions the forfeiture by Berlusconi.

PDL resignation, Napolitano: a "sudden and disturbing" decision

"A politically sudden and institutionally disturbing fact”. With these words the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, commented the last decision of the Pdl parliamentarians. Yesterday, at the end of a meeting, Pidellini's deputies, senators and ministers announced that they were ready to resign en bloc if Palazzo Madama gives the definitive go-ahead for Silvio Berlusconi's dismissal from Parliament.

The Head of State wrote a letter to Maria Romana De Gasperi to explain the reasons for his absence from the conference in Sala Zuccari in the Senate for the third meeting between the De Gasperi foundation and the Adenauer foundation. It was De Gasperi's daughter who read the letter during the meeting.

"Out of affection and out of respect, I had undertaken to attend the interview - Napolitano wrote - if a politically sudden and institutionally disturbing event had not occurred yesterday to which I must devote my attention today".

Sources from the Quirinal confirm that it is the President's intention to verify the actual intentions of the PDL MPs.
