Dieselgate, Volkswagen: 1,26 billion to US motorists

Volkswagen will pay $1,26 billion in settlements to the owners of some 82 vehicles involved in the Dieselgate scandal in the United States. This was announced by the German group after reaching an agreement with the Authority that protects American consumers, who will be able to take their cars to the workshop to have them repaired or replaced.

From the documents filed, it appears that the bill could be 4 billion if the regulators do not approve the repairs for all the vehicles of the German company, which in December had reached an agreement to withdraw 20 cars and fix another 60.

The transaction, Reuters reveals, provides that owners of diesel-powered vehicles can choose to repair them obtaining a reimbursement of between 7 thousand and 16 thousand dollars, with an additional bonus of 500 dollars if after the necessary operations the performance is affected. For those who instead access the "buyback", the repurchase by the parent company, a fee of 7.500 euros is foreseen in addition to the value of the vehicle.

At the beginning of the month, Volkswagen had negotiated for 4,3 billion with the US authorities, a figure that adds up to the previous 15 billion set aside.

For its part, the supplier of auto software Robert Bosch agreed to pay $327,5 million, according to the request presented by the San Francisco Court, by way of compensation for 554 thousand car owners. The group is accused of supplying Volkswagen with souped-up emissions-sensing software and then helping to cover up its existence.
