Diary of the earthquake: Confindustria meeting today in Modena

The Apennines go towards the Alps and a small strip of land collapses under the blows of the earthquake. Yesterday evening, at 21,20, the strongest tremor touched 5,1 on the Richter scale, but in the last 24 hours there have been 117 who have continued to shake Emilia and the area north of Modena, on the Brenner road.

During the night a strong, threatening and unusual wind rose, while today it rains, fortunately with less violence than feared. At least this will alleviate a little the thirst for water of the crops left without irrigation and will not cause too much discomfort to the displaced. A lucky land until 15 days ago, calm and diligent, suddenly seems hit by a biblical curse and does not see the end of this nightmare. On the day of national mourning, the funeral of some of the victims of May 29, it seems difficult to see the healing of this wound.

Businesses are meeting today in Modena, at the Confindustria headquarters, for the annual meeting and to take stock of the situation. The works will open with the report of the president of the Modenese industrialists, Pietro Ferrari. A round table will follow with four entrepreneurs from the area affected by the earthquake as protagonists: Roberto Fabbri, president of Abk Group (ceramics); Giuliana Gavioli, general manager of B.Braun Avitum Italy; Vainer Marchesini, president of Wam Group; Nicoletta Razzaboni, owner of Cima. Giorgio Squinzi, national president of Confindustria, will close.

On the other hand, last Friday the entrepreneurs met outdoors in Medolla, to speak with the Civil Protection. Those who work ask for a single line from the Municipalities, from the mayors. At the moment, however, everyone follows their own path, there are those who authorize private evaluations, those who demand authorized technicians. The "commissioners", president of the Region and mayors, should instead establish a common protocol, so that information is rapid and treatment is fair. “We don't want privileges, we don't ask for gifts – says Germano Budri, of Budri srl, the marble “seamstress” based in Mirandola – we just want efficiency, because we need this to get going again. We export 100% of what we do, we have lost our warehouses and we are already reorganizing ourselves in Verona and Vicenza, after purchasing new machines. However, in 9-12 months we would like to rebuild in Mirandola, with the most anti-seismic materials and criteria that exist. After 32 years we start again from here. We have never drawn on non-repayable resources and once again we roll up our sleeves. However, we ask the public party to do its part with the same efficiency ".

“We make filters in the biomedical sector – says Giorgio Mari, managing director of HemoCare in Finale Emilia – our customers are companies from all over the world. If we stop they will stop too and they want a plan within the next week, will we be able to provide it to them?”. The economic structure of these places is networked, most of the companies are part of an overall design. If a company stops and collapses, the typical domino effect is produced: dozens of cards collapse. The restart is comprehensive, because we are faced, as has been said, with "an extended enterprise". Today it is a fight against time and against a suddenly hostile nature.
