Di Maio undermines the agreement with Pd: "Conte bis and immediately the cut of parliamentarians"

The government agreement between the Five Stars and the Democratic Party is already one step away from bankruptcy, even if the negotiations go ahead. After a constructive meeting between the parliamentary group leaders of the two political forces, in the evening the political leader of the Five Stars, Luigi Di Maio, reversed the situation, bringing it one step away from the abyss and restoring hope to the League of being able to get back into the game.

Meeting with the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti, Di Maio placed two very clear preconditions to the government agreement: the confirmation of Giuseppe Conte as Prime Minister, on which Beppe Grillo had also spent the last few hours, and the immediate approval of the cut in parliamentarians, which would postpone the elections by at least six months but would not provide any guarantee on the correction of the electoral law.

Faced with Di Maio's ultimatum, the secretary of the Democratic Party - who then received the full support of Matteo Renzi - seemed taken aback and rejected the Conte bis request: "Nothing personal against Conte - he said - but the problem is political and the Pd calls for a government of discontinuity and turning point".

At this point anything can happen but if an agreement between M5S and Pd proves impossible, Salvini could come back into play who not by chance has already said that he is ready to immediately approve the cut in parliamentarians and slyly offered the leadership of the government to the ambitious Di Maio.

On Tuesday, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will demand that all political forces put their cards on the table except to form a guarantee government that will lead the country to elections under the guidance of an independent personality. In the next few hours it will be better understood whether Di Maio's ultimatum is a tactical gamble or the prelude to a change of scenery, but right now one consideration seems obvious: since the Five Stars see the elections as smoke and mirrors, their reopening of games with the League could not be based on Conte's reconfirmation (who shot zero in the Senate on Salvini) but would pave the way for Di Maio's rise to Palazzo Chigi. Except for ridicule the Five Stars themselves for the casual palace games on the skin of a country that is just waiting to be governed. With seriousness.
