Unexpected developments in the investigation into the Dhaka massacre, where 20 civilians – including nine Italians – were killed inside a restaurant on Friday evening. The commando responsible for the attack consisted of seven men, of whom six were killed, while one was wounded and captured. The surprise came when the identity of the attackers was discovered: they were all 20-year-old boys from good families, educated in the best schools in the country, rich, certainly not assassins with nothing to lose recruited from the last of society. It is for this reason that some representatives of the Bengali government tend to judge IS's claim unreliable and speak of a simple "infatuation" of those young people with the Caliphate.
The perpetrators of the massacre are "all educated, from wealthy families, went to university and none of them has ever attended a madrassa," said Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan. And when asked why they would become Islamic militants, Khan replied curtly: “It has become a fashion".
The number two of the Bengali Foreign Ministry, MD Shahidul Haque, does not exactly think so, as he does not deny the possibility of coordination by Isis. On the other hand, he too confirmed that "the authors are not from Iraq or Syria, they are young Bengalis, many of them educated, with good prospects and belonging to the country's middle class".
Meanwhile, Bengali Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the victims in the army stadium in the capital. On the second day of national mourning for the jihadist attack, the prime minister placed a wreath near the coffins which were covered by the flags of Italy, Japan, India, the USA and Bangladesh. The stadium was then opened to the public. In the evening, a ritual will be held for the Italian victims with the apostolic nuncio. Yesterday a plane from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arrived in Pakistan and the return of the bodies to our country is currently being organised.
