Design, iconic works and XNUMXth-century objects at auction in New York

European and American decorative arts and design from the last 100 years take the stage in New York – The sale made in the Big Apple by Important 20th Century Design ended with over 7 million dollars – The auction also saw many rare examples of pre-war European designs from private collections.

The sale included several iconic works from the American movement Arts & Crafts i, including an important and rare Music Cabinet designed by Harvey Ellis for the Gustav Stickley company which stood out for its exquisite marquetry decoration. A rare armchair from Donald Deskey for Radio City Music Hall and numerous masterpieces of modern American design from the 1930s.

The auction also saw many rare examples of pre-war European designs from private collections. Among the highlights a very important vase “Roses” by Rene Lalique, executed in 1913. This extraordinary vase is the most emblematic work executed in lost wax in glass by René Lalique.

The sale also saw a range of modern and contemporary designs, highlighted by major works by Maria Pergay, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, George Nakashima, Wendell Castle, Studio Job, Johnny Swing, Hella Jongerius and Maya Lin.

HARVEY ELLIS – AN IMPORTANT AND RARE MUSIC CABINET – (Estimate: 90,000-120,000 USD) sold 182,500 USD .

GREENE & GREENE – EXTERIOR LANTERN FROM THE ROBERT R. BLACKER HOUSE, PASADENA, CALIFORNIA – (Estimate: USD 70,000-90,000) sold for $170,500. 

ÉMILE-JACQUES RUHLMANN – “CERCLES ET ONDES” CARPET, MODEL NR3180 – (Estimate: 150,000-250,000 USD) sold for $170,500.

DEMETER CHIPARUS – “ETOILE DE MER” – (Estimate: USD 100,000-150,000) Sold for USD 158,500.
