Slightly negative balance for the Italian companies between January and March. Two years after the pandemic, the shock imprinted on birth rate e mortality of businesses also seems to have absorbed for the first quarter of 2023 which highlighted substantial stability in the registrations in the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce (101.788 units, in line with the same period of 2022). At the same time there was a significant increase in closures compared to the same period of the previous two years (109.231 units) even if these are lower values ​​than in the last ten years.

This is the scenario that emerges from the Movimprese data processed by Unioncamere – InfoRooms based on the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce relating to the trend in the first quarter of 2023, at the end of which the entrepreneurial fabric decreased by -7.443 units (-0,12% of the stock of companies). A decline which however remains among the most contained in the recent past and which (with the sole exception of 2021) traditionally characterizes the quarters at the beginning of the year due to the concentration of cancellations at the end of the previous year and the beginning of the new .

Professional activities are good, trade and agriculture are bad

Even in a context of substantial stability, some sectors see their entrepreneurial base increase appreciably. Among these are the professional activities, scientific e specifications (+2.992 companies), le real estate activities (+1.571) and the construction (+1.070), still under the "long" wave of incentives forbuilding. On the opposite front, the most retreating are the trade sectors (-8.806 companies, -0,61%) and ofagriculture (-6.167 units, -0,85%).

Companies grow and sole proprietorships decrease

Among the legal forms, the most dynamic segment of our entrepreneurial fabric continues to be that of capital company, which increased by 13 thousand units in the quarter (equal to a growth rate of 0,69%). A vitality that fails to fully compensate for the negative balance of sole proprietorships, which in the period decreased by 14.389 units (equal to 0,47% less), of partnerships (-5.068 equal to a growth rate of -0,56%) and of "Other forms", which recorded 733 less unit (equal to 0,35% less).

Demographics of businesses at the local level

At the territorial level, the analysis shows negative balances in all four major divisions, each one down compared to a year ago. Between regions, Lazio, Sardinia e Trentino Alto Adige they are those that record a positive balance – albeit limited – with 1.157, 253 and 85 more companies respectively. While Piemonte e Sicilia they are those that closed the first quarter of 2023 with the worst result in absolute terms, with 1.638 and 907 companies respectively less.
