Default Sicily, Monti: Lombardo confirms his resignation

The prime minister, Mario Monti, wrote to the governor of Sicily, Raffaele Lombardo, to ask him to confirm his intention to resign on 31 July. The situation of the regional government - explains Palazzo Chigi in a note - is decisive for the purposes of the possible solutions that the Government could put in place to avoid the risk of default of the Region.

"As an interpreter of the serious concerns regarding the possibility that Sicily could go into default due to its budget - it reads - Monti wrote a letter to the President of the Region, Raffaele Lombardo, to confirm the intention, publicly declared, to resign on July 31st. The solutions that could be envisaged for action by the executive cannot fail to take into account the government situation at the regional level but rather must be commensurate with it, so as to be able to use the most effective and adequate tools”.
