Decarbonisation: alliance between Enel and 11 European companies

The CEO of Enel, Francesco Starace, has signed a agreement with the CEOs of 11 other European companies which plans to create an alliance for the decarbonisation of the European economy.

The agreement, renamed "CEO Alliance” is made up of companies from various sectors that generate 600 billion in annual revenues and employ 1,7 million people: in addition to Enel, they are part of the alliance ABB, AkzoNobel, Eon, Iberdrola, AP Møller Maersk, Philips, SAP , Scania, Schneider Electric, Siemens and Volkswagen. The aim of the initiative is to support the objectives promoted by the European Union which envisage a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030. “All members support the Paris 2050 objectives, the EU Green Deal and the ambition of broaden the EU's climate objectives”, reads the Enel press release which explains how lhe CEO Alliance focuses above all on decarbonisation.

At its inaugural meeting in Stuttgart, the cross-industry alliance stressed: “The climate goals of the European Union are achievable. Our industries do not block, but rather promote the transition to a carbon neutral economy. We see growth potential for all sectors over the long term. If we successfully manage this historic transformation, the result will be sustainable development and future-proof new jobs. Together, we will support all efforts to reach a social consensus for greater sustainability." With the start of the works, the CEO Alliance becomes an action association that aims to unite business strategies, industries and companies on the road to a carbon neutral Europe.

The members of the alliance are also committed to investing over 100 billion euros in their respective decarbonisation action plans over the next few years to help achieve EU targets. “Each member – continues the note – has defined its own strategy to address decarbonisation, reducing carbon emissions along relevant value chains and offering sustainable products and services to customers.”
The collaboration will cover various fields: energy systems; increasing the production of renewable energy; the modernization of electricity networks, the enhancement of infrastructure for recharging electric vehicles and the transport of low-emission goods; zero-impact production for components of renewable energy generation systems and sustainable production of batteries; the focus on zero-emission offices and sustainable urban planning.
