Maurizio Fugatti was confirmed president of the autonomous province of Trento, while in South Tyrol the game to form a new majority could be much more complicated than expected due to the hemorrhage of votes suffered by the SVP and the collapse of the League.
Trentino: Fugatti president
While there are only a handful of sections left to scrutinize, the outcome is now certain: Maurizio Fugatti does an encore and confirms himself as president of the autonomous province of Trento. Fugatti, candidate of the centre-right, obtained over 50% of the votes (51,9%) ahead of its centre-left rival Francesco Valduga by more than 14 points (the latter obtained approximately 37%).
Filippo Degasperi of the Onda coalition reached 4%, Sergio Divina of Alternative Popular for Trentino failed to reach 3%, Marco Rizzo of Democracy Sovereign Popular is at 2% ahead of Alex Marini of the 5 Star Movement and Elena Dardo of Alternative list.
The confirmation of Fugatti, known in recent months at a national level for his ordinances on the culling of bears, had already been widely anticipated by polls which made his victory almost certain. “The voters approved our government. It is a result that gives us even more responsibility", said the reconfirmed president.
Trentino: the League halves its votes, PD first party
Bitter pill for the League which, despite Fugatti's reconfirmation, exits the polls with half the votes obtained in the previous electoral round. Five years ago, Matteo Salvini's party reached 27%, today it is at 13,3%. First party is the PD, which obtained 15% of the preferences compared to 13,9% in 2018. Continued Brothers of Italy, which rose from 1,45% to 12% of the votes. Translated: the League's votes practically went to the Government allies as a bloc.
Low theaffluence, which fell to 58,39%, six percentage points less than in 2018.
Alto Adige: SVP loses votes, the League suffers here too
The South Tyrolean governor Arno Kompatscher and his SVP win the elections, but the party is postponed due to the strong loss of consensus decreed by the polls which makes the formation of a new right difficult.
According to the definitive data, lin Volkspartei it drops to 34,5% (-7,4%) and to 13 directors (15). The second and third forces in the provincial council are the Team K (11,1%) and the Süd-Tiroler Freiheit (10,9%), both with 4 councillors.
At the foot of the podium the Greens (9%, 3 councillors), while Fdi flies and becomes the first Italian-speaking force with 6% of the votes and 2 councillors. In 2018 it stopped at 1,7%. The coalition partner of the SVP, the League collapses to 3% from 11,1% 5 years ago and will only have one representative anymore.
“We are ready – says Alessandro Urzì, leader of FdI in the region – to govern together with the SVP. The votes confirm that there can no longer be ethnic or linguistic prejudices. Fratelli d'Italia at this point wants to participate in the government of autonomy. I tell the SVP to have faith and to think about stability, about the best opportunities for Alto Adige, in dialogue with Rome and Trento".
Also noteworthy is the entry into the provincial council of the list of the former commander of the Schützen, Jürgen Wirth Anderlan, who with anti-vax and anti-migrant slogans wins two seats (5,9%). Two councilors also for Freiheitlichen (4,9% against 6,2% five years ago). The Democratic Party is stable with one councilor and 3,5% of the votes (-0,3%). The list of the former SVP councilor Thomas Widmann stops at a single councilor (3,4%), as does La Civica (2,6%) and the anti-vax Vita list which enters the council with the lawyer. Renate Holzeisen (2,6%). Below one percent and the M5s (0,7%) and Forza Italia are far from entering the council (0,6%).
Difficult to dissolve is the crux of the new council, because SVP, FDI and Lega together stop at 16 councilors, to reach the indispensable 18, the Freiheitlichen would be needed. An alternative could be the Greens and Team K who have 20 councillors. The so-called Jamaica coalition (for the colors of the parties), however, does not convince the conservative and pragmatic soul of the Volkspartei. The outgoing council was supported by the League and Forza Italia, but the SVP had 15 seats and the League 3, while now the SVP has fallen to 13 and the League to 1.
THEaffluence was at 71,5%, down from 73,9% in 2018.
