US duties: from 23 August new tariffs on Chinese goods for 16 billion

On August 23, American tariffs will be implemented on products imported from China for 16 billion dollars a year. The tariff increase will be added to the increase on 6 July on 818 Made in China items for 34 billion dollars.

The new move was widely expected, given that the phase in which the Trump administration collected comments on the missed duties to reach the 50 billion quota had expired on August 279 last year. After having heard the opinion of companies that could be affected by the measure, five items were removed from the original list leaving XNUMX products subject to the duties (they are mainly chemical and electronic components).

In order not to harm Corporate America, the US government is willing to evaluate any requests for exemption from groups who will be able to demonstrate the difficulties experienced with the entry into force of the new duties and the inability to obtain the targeted products elsewhere from Washington to punish Beijing.

China has already said which will respond with equivalent countermeasures as it did on July 6 by targeting various Made in the USA products including soybeans.

Meanwhile last week the Trump government has confirmed to be studying a hike to 25% from 10% other tariffs on 200 billion Chinese imports. Beijing reacted by threatening tariffs on 60 billion US imports and declaring itself ready for a "protracted war".
