Car duties, Germany threatens to sue the USA

The American president said the United States intends to impose a 35% tariff on BMW vehicles manufactured in the new plant in Mexico and exported to the United States.

Tensions rise between Germany and the United States. And the German Economy Minister says clearly that the government can sue the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO), against the customs tax on German cars proposed by President Donald Trump. Trum is expected to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel today, Friday 17 March.

The American president said the United States intends to impose a 35% tariff on BMW vehicles manufactured in the new plant in Mexico and exported to the United States.

Responding to a question about the US proposal, Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries told Deutschlandfunk radio that it was a difficult thing to achieve due to the complexity of the tax system.

“The other possibility is to sue the WTO – procedures are foreseen because the agreement expressly states that no one is authorized to ask for a tax higher than 2,5% on the import of vehicles,” says Zypries.
