Data Science: Alma Mater and Golinelli Foundation launch the first master's on Big Data and Industry 4.0

From Industry 4.0 to Bioinformatics up to Big Data. These are just some of the innovative areas in which the new doctoral school in Data Science and Computation is set up by the University of Bologna and the Golinelli Foundation.

Approved today by the Academic Senate and the Alma Mater Board of Directors, the project has already garnered the interest of the Milan Polytechnic, Cineca, CNR, INFN, the Italian Institute of Technology and the ISI Foundation. And the Emilia-Romagna Region has also said it is ready to support the initiative.

It is an innovative, wide-ranging multidisciplinary course, which aims to become an international excellence in the field of Big Data and Data Science, ranging from Economics and Finance to Materials and Industry 4.0, from Medicine and Genomics to Bioinformatics , from Hardware and Infrastructures to Machine Learning and Deep Learning, up to Computational Physics. The doctorate will also be functional in supporting research in significant areas for the activities of the Data Center of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) which, as recently announced, will move from Reading to Bologna.

The activation of the school, which should present a minimum expected offer of 18/20 four-year scholarships with the amount of a research grant, was announced last November 10 by the rector of the University of Bologna Francesco Ubertini, by the president of the Golinelli Foundation Andrea Zanotti and by the then rector of the Milan Polytechnic Giovanni Azzone, during a meeting at the Opificio Golinelli in the presence of former Minister Stefania Giannini.

The PhD school in Data Science and Computation will be based in Opificio Golinelli. In all, there will be a maximum of 30 master students each year and will become around a hundred when (in the fourth year) the course runs at full speed. In addition to the plurality of subjects that the year promotes, there is nothing so massive in the world and those who acquire skills in big data know that they will have no difficulty in finding a job.
