From the IAEA severe accusations against Fukushima in Tokyo
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) points the finger at Japan: according to the inspectors of the international body, Tokyo has underestimated the tsunami risk in relation to its nuclear power plants and must now carefully monitor the state of health of people and workers after the Fukushima disaster.
The report, compiled by a team of experts led by Mike Weightman, Britain's top nuclear safety official, highlights some of the shortcomings that contributed to the crisis at the plant in that Japanese city, 240 kilometers north of Tokyo. hit in rapid succession by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March.
A plan to deal with a 5,7-metre tsunami wave that hit the plant knocking out the emergency generators of four reactors was missing, despite multiple predictions by a government agency and Tokyo Electric Power scientists themselves (Tepco) that such a risk loomed. “The tsunami risk for several sites has been underestimated,” reads the three-page report.
