From Intesa and Mastercard a card to pay with fingerprints

A contactless payment card that recognizes the owner's fingerprints. This is the pilot project presented by Intesa Sanpaolo and Mastercard at the Salone dei Pagamenti in Milan. This is the first experiment in Italy on the use of one-card biometric technology. The test phase will take place for 16 weeks in Turin, Milan and Rome.

La new biometric card allows you to combine the advantages of chip technology with those of biometrics to verify the identity of the holder in a convenient and secure way. In this case the biometric technology used is based on fingerprint recognition, as is already the case for some payment systems with mobile phones.

The biometric data of the holder are detected in the branch using a special device capable of memorizing and safely preserving the fingerprint on the card. To pay, simply bring it close to the POS terminal keeping your thumb on the card sensor. This will activate the fingerprint verification process, at the end of which the purchase will be authorised.

Biometric cards can be used worldwide and can be recognized by any EMV-certified POS and ATM terminal.

The test phase developed by Intesa Sanpaolo and Mastercard also makes it possible to experiment for the first time in Europe with the use of a biometric card which is also equipped with contactless technology, thanks to which it is sufficient to bring the card close to the POS terminal to give the off to the transaction.
