From power plant to tourist village, Futur-E advances in Piombino

The project is called Futur-e and was born as a circular economy path for give new life to 23 thermoelectric plants: plants that have supported the industrial growth of our country and that today, through collaboration with the territories and the creation of shared value, Enel wants to transform into new stories of sustainable development and innovation.

And it has already defined the fate of two of these former plants, among the most famous in the country: if Montalto di Castro will become a tourist port, complete with restaurants, hotels and a golf course, also the 140 hectares of the oil-fired plant of Piombino (40 occupied since the plant shut down in 2015) are preparing to transform into one multifunctional space which will include commercial areas, areas with tourist-accommodation and recreational functions, places for scientific research and experimental agriculture. Another virtuoso example of sustainable innovation in the field of the divestment of industrial areas.

The construction, following a competitive sale procedure launched by Enel, is entrusted to the company Stigliano Sviluppo srl, which a few weeks ago signed the preliminary agreement for the acquisition of the area of theformer Piombino plant. The objective is in line with the Futur-e project: to convert the space to new uses, different from the production of energy, capable of guaranteeing the territory new opportunities in harmony with the principles of sustainability social, economic and environmental.

The idea of transforming the decommissioning of a plant into a new development opportunity was also applied in Piombino in the first phase of testing the use of new technologies for remediation, completed successfully, the results of which were submitted to the competent regional authorities in order to start the activities. In particular, a biological treatment was used for the areas where the presence of hydrocarbons was detected, which favors the disintegration process by the bacteria naturally present in the soil.

A project that among other things makes the Toscana the first Region to address the issue of reclamation of industrial sites with innovative technologiesbe sustainable and reproposed on a large scale on other similar sites at national and international level, with a view to The circular economy, a principle that the Region has recently implemented in its statute.

At a less advanced stage but in any case already on its way towards its future new destination is Porto Tolle, for which Enel has signed a "letter of intent" with Human Company, a leading Italian group in hospitality tourism. Thus the process for the redevelopment of the former thermoelectric plant of Porto Tolle, the site near the nature reserve of Po Delta. Human Company's proposal plans to transform the site in a innovative open-air tourist village.
