Tax wedge: Letta proposes a pact between the government and the social partners for a shock cut equal to one month's salary

The secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, proposes a pact between the Government and the social partners for a shock cut in the tax wedge that brings an extra month's salary to the workers' paychecks. Letta supported him at the traditional conference of the Young Industrialists of Confindustria in Rapallo and, in words, everyone agreed with him: from the unions to entrepreneurs and political parties, to the point that the President of Confindustria took the opportunity: "So let's do it on monday". But then it stays the problem of finding the necessary resources and it is probable that it will be discussed in the meeting that Prime Minister Mario Draghi has convened with the social partners in two weeks' time.

Tax wedge: shock cut in two stages

In reality, Letta proposes a two-step intervention on labor costs: suffered a cut of the wedge for the poorest workers which would reinforce the one-off 0,8% cut effective from December and beyond a structural cut of the tax wedge in the October budget law to be financed with the proceeds from the fight against tax evasion. At the end of the operations the cut would lead an extra month's salary of 15 million employees with salaries of up to 35 euros gross per year. "We put the bulk of the budget resources - explains Letta - on the reduction of labor costs with a shock intervention on the tax wedge".

Both the secretary of the League agree, Matteo Salvini, which however also proposes a "fiscal peace on the folders" that that of the Five Stars, Giuseppe Conte. The leader of Italia Viva and former premier Matteo Renzi however he remembers: “Everyone is talking but we cut the cost of labor with 80 euros”.

Of course, the President of Confindustria also agrees, Carlo Bonomi, who asks to move immediately to the facts and comes to propose a cut of 16 billion euros, of which two thirds (10,7 billion) for workers and one third (5,3 billion) for businesses.
