92 billion euros is what the Cultural and Creative Productive System produces in numbers (including companies, Public Administration and the non-profit sector), but it moves up to a total of 255,5 in the cultural supply chain with 16,6% of the wealth produced .

Culture: engine of the Italian economy

This is what emerges from Report 2018 “I am culture” elaborated by Symbola Foundation and Unioncamere, with the collaboration of the Marche Region and presented at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism in the presence of the new Minister Alberto Bonisoli.

By Cultural and Creative Production System we mean all those economic activities that produce culture, goods and services. It is divided into five primary areas: creative industry - architecture, communication and design -;  cultural industries – cinema, publishing, videogames, music, press, software -; cultural historical heritage - museums, libraries, archives, historical monuments and archaeological sites -; performing arts and visual arts  and creative-driven businesses (i.e. those companies that employ creative and cultural professionals for their production, as in the case of advanced manufacturing or craftsmanship.

Currently, cultural companies employ 488 people. Creative enterprises reach 261 employees, the performing arts 141 jobs, the enhancement and conservation of the historical and artistic heritage 51 other employees. To these four sectors are added the creative-driven activities with more than 579 jobs.

It is design that plays a significant role in this analysis and which produces 8,6 billion euros of added value together with architecture; followed by communication with 4,3 billion euros. Sectors such as publishing, video games and software follow. These last two produce 8 billion euros for our economy.

The geographical distribution sees the city of Milan in first place, followed by Rome, Turin, Siena, Arezzo, Florence, Ancona, Aosta, Bologna, Modena.

The enterprises of the System count the presence (2017) of no less than 414.701 enterprises which account for 6,7% of the total Italian activities.

Women's businesses are on the increase in the supply chain, with a growth of 0,3% compared to the previous year, we generally find them in the publishing and communication fields.

If we want to analyze the incidences by macro area, the Center produces 7,3% of the added value, the North West 6,8% and the North East 5,4%. The South, the richest in cultural sites and historical heritage, reaches 4,2%.

According to Minister Bonisoli, work in this sector is growing, furthermore being a highly qualified sector also given by the high number of graduates compared to other sectors, this allows us to further support the positive trend of the creative company that exports creativity. Furthermore, great importance must be given to the restoration sector, due to the great professionalism inherent in the Italian tradition, but also a specialized sector capable of offering very high quality service also in the world.

From this document it seems that there is an increasing need for culture, beauty, quality and innovation to support the Italian economy in the future.
