Road collapses: Anas in the government's sights

The road collapses continue and Anas also ends up in the sights of Palazzo Chigi. The last case concerns the failure of a pylon on the A19 Palermo-Catania, caused by a landslide on the Scillate-Caltavuturo provincial road that runs alongside the highway since 2005. In Sardinia, however, the Statale 554 which connects the metropolitan area of Cagliari and the tourist area of Villasimius, built just 10 years ago, is already devastated by chasms caused by rains, landslides and perhaps by some errors in the design phase.

Returning to Sicily, the list of failures in recent times begins on February 2, 2013 with collapse of a portion of the Verdura viaduct, along the Statale 115 which connects Agrigento with Sciacca. On July 7 of the same year the carriageways of a bridge they bent downwards due to a structural failure in the Petrulla district, in the territory of Licata (Ag), on the state road 626 which connects Campobello di Licata, Ravanusa and Canicattì. However, the case that caused the greatest uproar was that of the Scorciavacche viaduct on the Palermo-Agrigento state road, which opened on Christmas Eve 2014 and collapsed after just a week.

"Anas cannot continue with the blame game, "Said Erasmus D'Angelis, coordinator of the mission structure of Palazzo Chigi (#italiasicura) and trusted man of Matteo Renzi and the new Minister of Infrastructure Graziano Delrio. “The collapse of the viaduct on New Year's Eve already seemed an incredible story to me – he added -. This other case (the one in Sardinia, ed), which they had known for ten years, seems frankly embarrassing to me. He asks me if Soothers should he take notice and walk away? I just say that everyone must assume their responsibilities".

In our country, according to De Angelis, "engineering thought it could do without geology", since infrastructural works are almost always carried out without carrying out preventive geological studies. Furthermore, when there is a landslide risk, one prefers not to intervene, as Anas did in the case of the Sicilian motorway: it could have consolidated the hill by spending 30 million, while now, after the collapse, the viaduct will have to be redone paying out 350.

Delrium, apparently, intends to intervene forcefully. And soon the #italiasicura task force will give the green light to a fund in collaboration with the State Accounting Office and the Ministries of Environment and Infrastructure to launch a national plan to combat landslides.
