Crisis, Conte towards resignation: the majority is not there

“We support Conte but there are no numbers” : it is the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti, who says it after that the UDC slipped away at least for now from the front of the so-called "responsible". And that is why Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is preparing to go up to the Quirinale to inform the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the state of the political crisis. Conte is thinking about lightning-resignation, to be put back into the hands of the Head of State in the next few hours but certainly before Wednesday's test of the truth in Parliament on the annual report on Justice of the controversial grillino minister Alfonso Bonafede. According to the latest rumors, the prime minister will go up to the Quirinale to resign on Tuesday morning after a quick meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Conte's hope is to obtain a lightning reappointment to create a Conte-ter government but it won't be easy, because for now it doesn't have a solid majority that would allow it to navigate safely in the face of the pandemic emergency - which is becoming more complicated due to delays by pharmaceutical companies in delivery of vaccines – and faced with the implementation of the Recovery Plan which today has also been harshly criticized by Confindustria above all for the unresolved problem of governance.

But the central political node remains the relationship between Conte, the Democratic Party and the Five Stars on the one hand and Italia Viva by Matteo Renzi on the other. Compared to recent days, both in the Democratic Party and in the Five Stars, a greater realism seems to prevail, namely the awareness that, without a reconciliation with Matteo Renzi, it would be difficult to create a solid majority and, in the absence of this clarification, also the permanence di Conte at Palazzo Chigi would come back into question.

But the situation remains very uncertain and anything can still happen, even if you get to change the prime minister.

  1. Conte has exposed Parliament to the ridicule of citizens who are already critical and skeptical of the role of the main organ of the Republic.
