Cryptocurrencies, Consob and Banca d'Italia warn

Bitcoin's recent records have turned the spotlight on crypto-assets, but they present major risks of volatility, malfunction and cyber-attacks

Cryptocurrencies, Consob and Banca d'Italia warn

The recent historical records of Bitcoin have certified that this is the moment of cryptocurrencies, even if it would be better not to get carried away, waiting for these financial activities to be fully recognized and regulated. Caution is advised by Consob and the Bank of Italy, which jointly called the attention of the community, especially small savers, on the "high risks associated with operations in crypto-assets which can lead to the complete loss of the sums of money used". So reads a joint note in which it is underlined that the recall "is appropriate pending the definition of a unitary regulatory framework at European level".

For some time, the press release from the central banking institution and the stock exchange supervisory body insists, there has been growing interest on the market, at European and international level, in crypto-assets, such as for example Bitcoin, which has arrived recently to exceed $50.000 in value. “In the absence of a reference regulatory framework, crypto-asset operations present risks of a different nature, including the scarce availability of information regarding the methods for determining prices; the volatility of quotations; the complexity of the underlying technologies; the absence of legal and contractual safeguards, of information obligations on the part of the operators and of specific forms of supervision of these operators as well as of rules to safeguard the sums used”.

Finally, the note mentions the risk of loss due to malfunctions, cyber attacks or loss of access credentials to electronic wallets: "These risks are now taking on greater importance in relation to the spread of forms of offering through the digital channel which facilitate the purchase of crypto-assets by a very large number of subjects".
