Crack Parmalat: Tanzi sentenced to 17 years and 10 months on appeal

Calisto Tanzi was sentenced on appeal by the Court of Bologna to 17 years and 10 months for the Parmalat crack from from 14,5 billion. The sentence was reduced by a few months compared to what was requested in the first instance by the Attorney General Alberto Candi (18 years and 3 months). The former patron of the Collecchio group was not present at the reading of the sentence because he was hospitalized in Parma hospital. His lawyers have already announced that they will appeal to the Supreme Court.

“The sentence is substantially in line, due to Calisto Tanzi's position, with the forecasts made – commented the lawyer Fabio Belloni, one of the three defenders -. I have noticed the Court's work on some indictments. Clearly it was intense and therefore we will have to read the sentence to understand the final effects ”.

The Supervisory Court of Bologna is due to rule on the imprisonment of Tanzi (73 years old) next month, after the lawyers of the former Parmalat boss presented a request for release. Last month Tanzi asked for forgiveness for the "suffering" caused to those who suffered the damages of Parmalat's bankruptcy, including many small savers.
