Covid 19 and travel: the map of Enel X and Here

Phase 2 of the coronavirus emergency is approaching and we need to actually start thinking about how to track the movements of citizens, to prevent infections and allow a gradual return to a normal social and economic life. A solution is offered by Enel X and Here Technologies, a global company in geographic data and mapping services, which together launched "City Analytics - Mobility Map", a big data technology that estimates the variation of journeys and kilometers traveled by citizens on the national, regional, provincial and municipal territory. The solution adds to the City Analytics suite, already created by Enel X for Public Administrations and urban planning.

The app provides the mapping of the mobility macro-flows on the Italian territory at regional, provincial and municipal level, based on the analysis of anonymous and aggregated data, coming from connected vehicles, maps and navigation systems, processed in correlation with location data coming from mobile applications and open data of the PA. All of this is processed and can make very interesting and valuable data available to the government and local and health authorities, for example on the following aspects:

  • daily percentage change, compared to a weighted average of January 2020, of the number of trips on the territory, with a regional, provincial and municipal aggregate view;
  • daily percentage change, compared to a weighted average of January 2020, of total kilometers travelled, with an aggregate regional, provincial and municipal view;
  • percent daily view with evidence of the areas crossed at the entrance and exit of each Municipality, Province, Region;
  • source/destination arrays showing the percentage of trips weekly between Regions, between Provinces and between the main Municipalities.

The data can be consulted free of charge until 31 May 2020, both by institutions (Pa., local authorities, civil protection) and by citizens, on the Enel X YoUrban portal, and used to understand the impacts of COVID-19 containment measures; identify areas that need more support in implementing these measures; analyze in a data-driven way the gradual return to normal once the pandemic is over.

“The new release of City Analytics – he commented Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel X – is an innovative tool developed to meet the needs of the Public Administration, committed to dealing with the emergency. Thanks to the collaboration with HERE Technologies, we have made a concrete solution available to the country through which it is possible to evaluate the data on the evolution of mobility flows in the area, useful for planning the recovery phase".
