Costa Concordia: goodbye to the Giglio, the wreck transported to Genoa

The Costa Concordia bids farewell to Giglio and sails towards Genoa. The last go-ahead for the departure of the wreck was given this morning, putting an end to a two-and-a-half year long nightmare: afterwards, the ship was rotated 180 degrees and started heading north, dragged by two tugs and greeted by a long round of applause in the Takedown Operations Coordination Center.

Many comments from the authorities at the departure of the wreck, starting with the mayor of Giglio, Sergio Ortelli: “We are at the exit of the tunnel, but we have a piece of road to go. We are not the island of tragedy, but an island that wants to resume its journey for a return to normality". This was stated by the mayor of Giglio, Sergio Ortelli, at the press conference following the departure of the Concordia.

“Today's success was a tribute to the victims – commented the undersecretary to the presidency of the Council Graziano del Rio -. An important phase is concluded but it is not the end of this story. Concordia is gone, but the pain of the families of the victims has not gone with her". The Concordia is now awaited in the port of Genoa.
