Court of Auditors: VAT evasion at 36%, record level in Europe

Italians, people of tax evaders. In our country VAT not paid to the state exceeds 36%, one of the highest values among the large European countries. He revealed it today president of the Court of Auditors, Luigi Giampaolinoat the opening of the judicial year. "Accurate analyzes conducted for VAT - said Giampaolino - show for Italy a tax gap of over 36%, which is by far the highest among the large European countries, with the exception of Spain", which exceeds 30%.

For tax compliance "the quantifications that the government is required to present annually to the Chambers are still missing – added the president of the Court of Auditors -, just as there is still no official estimate of the extent of tax evasion. On the basis of the analyzes and studies carried out, however, they must be considered the estimates that quantify the taxes evaded annually at at least 100-120 billion euros are reliable".

The analyzes on the trend of tax evasion, explained Giampaolino, "showed a fall in compliance, both in Italy and in the rest of Europe, during the crisis that preceded the current one, i.e. in 2008 and in the first nine months of the 2009. Since the last quarter of 2009 there has been a generalized phenomenon of compliance recovery, however less accentuated for Italy than for the other major European countries”.
