Corrida: it's war between Spain and Catalonia

Six years ago, Catalonia banned by law, within its borders, all types of entertainment involving "animal suffering". Which mainly meant one thing: goodbye bullfights. But Spain is not about to give up one of its oldest traditions. The constitutional court in Madrid will soon overturn the ban sanctioned by Barcelona. According to the Iberian judges, the autonomous Catalan Parliament does not have the competence to ban "an asset of national cultural interest" from the country.

The question arises from an appeal presented by 50 senators of the Partido Popular, according to whom "the bullfighting activity constitutes a first-level economic market". The Spanish Constitutional Court has therefore been called to decide and could soon sanction the return of bullfighting in Catalonia.

For its part, the government led by Carles Puigdemont has no intention of giving up. In addition to going ahead unilaterally with the referendum on independence, he won't even go back on shows with bulls: "nothing will change, cruelty against animals will not be allowed here", they say to the Catalan Generalitat.
