According to the analysis by Unioncamere and InfoCamere, almost half of the shops open sell food products - 800 people are at work

Government restrictions to combat the coronavirus emergency have forced the closure of the majority of shops and activities that offer services to the person. From clothing stores to hairdressers, all with their shutters down. There is though who stays open and continues to work to offer citizens goods and basic necessities, but also cigarettes and newspapers.

There are about half a million services and activities open to date in Italy, of which 230 are active in the food sector. 800 people work within them. These are the numbers provided by Unioncamere and InfoCamere and based on the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce.

Going into the details of the analysis, most of the food outlets open are in Campania, which has almost 33 active employees with 37 employees. The region, on the other hand, boasts the largest nationwide network of small retail businesses (over 19), mini-markets (almost 11) and frozen food shops (633). 

They are less but bigger than them over 25 food establishments open in Lombardy, second in terms of number of points of sale in this sector, which employ over 82 employees. The region led by Attilio Fontana currently has the largest number of active hypermarkets in the country (212 with 23 employees), flanked by 2.100 supermarkets, employing 38 people. However, there are also neighborhood shops: almost 15 in the area with 12 employees. 

Follows Lazio, with over 24 establishments open and 44 employees at work. “In the Capital region, where almost all types of food sales are represented, the largest number of discount stores nationwide is concentrated: 363 with almost 4 employees. The region is also in second place for the spread of hypermarkets (90 with almost 2 workers) and in third place (after Campania and Sicily) for the presence of supermarkets (over 2.500 with more than 21 workers)”, underlines Unioncamere.
