Coronavirus, the appeal of Massari and the pastry chefs to the Government

The doyen of Italian pastry chefs wrote a heartfelt letter to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to denounce the risks that the sector is running: "Without your help, our Italy will remain a populous desert".

Coronavirus emergency, master pastry chefs also take the field, led by the dean Iginio Massari. The pastry chef from Brescia, in a letter sent to the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and signed by dozens of colleagues, pastry shops from Brescia and from all over Italy, raised the alarm for the future of the sector, which is currently completely at a standstill due to the restrictive measures launched by the Government: "Business risk distinguishes and identifies us self-employed, but it cannot take its extremes in the supine and passive acceptance of the thunderous silence of these first economic interventions", Massari wrote in his heartfelt appeal, inviting the executive to take new initiatives to avoid that, when all this is over, Italy does not end up being "a populous desert".

Here is the full text of the letter:

Ill. Mr. President of the Council,

Please grant a fellow citizen the hidden arrogance of occupying you in a time that, so tightly, already finds you at the service of the country.

This is not the time for controversy; it is that of the union which, fervent and solid, is strengthened in the privilege of accepting the solutions offered by the Politics.

Here is what each of us expects: that the State is not a mere transient and ephemeral shock absorber, that it is not the granter of a freedom snatched away by dripping, that not be the dispenser of a drop to quench an implacable thirst.

Each professional category, each age, experiences its own particular dramas: next to, and yet distant from, those to whom preliminary protection has already been offered, there is then the subjective fabric of the self-employed: professionals, VAT numbers, artisans and small businesses.

I'm not a state accountant: I can't know how much they affect and in what percentage they are competitors of the economy.

However, I have the claim to know my work: I know how much the uncertainty that Politics is asked to fill today is an obstacle to hope, even before proceeds. Business risk distinguishes and identifies us self-employed, but it cannot take its extremes in the supine and passive acceptance of the thunderous silence of these first economic interventions.

I am aware that you have declared that new and forthcoming initiatives will come.

Now let's not forget, too, the most far-sighted Policy that when our freedom is restored we will have a renewed desire for beauty and excellence, to meet again and to be together: I ask you that on that day there is still a restaurant to satisfy us, a pastry to fill the palate, a boutique to free a wish, a craftsman who makes us come true, a theater that welcomes us.

Without your help, however, our Italy will remain a populous desert. Treats
