Prohibition of entry and exit from the areas of Northern Italy affected by the coronavirus which unfortunately has also affected Italy, more than the rest of Europe, already making three victims (one in Veneto and two in Lombardy) and raising the sad count of infections to over 100 cases, which currently affects 5 regions in all (in addition to Veneto and Lombardy, there are also Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Lazio). This was decided by the Government on Saturday evening, meeting urgently in the Civil Protection headquarters, in the first decree on the coronavirus emergency which will soon be followed by another with economic aid to the areas and populations affected by the epidemic.

The decree, in addition to theisolation of the affected areas in the Lodi area and in the Veneto region which will become real "red zones", also provides for the closure of schools, offices and companies, the stop to school trips in Italy and abroad and to sporting and non-sporting events. As a result, the Serie A football matches of Inter, Atalanta, Turin and Verona were cancelled, as was the Venice Carnival. The Milan Cathedral was also closed on Sunday afternoon. The emergency measures will be modulated according to the evolution of the health situation and will last at least a couple of weeks.

Anyone who violates government provisions will face penal sanctions that can go up to three months' imprisonment. Only the prefects will be able to authorize special derogations. But to enforce the prohibitions, the Government, in addition to the collaboration of citizens, will make use of the forces of order and does not exclude the intervention of the army. Police and Carabinieri checkpoints they are foreseen around the Municipalities of the contagion to prevent the residents from leaving while their food will be ensured by "sterile" corridors, regulated by the prefectures, to allow the entry of foodstuffs and medicines.

In the so-called "red zones" neither trains nor public transport will arrive and within the affected areas, circulation will be severely limited and, if necessary, prohibited altogether.

"At the moment - explained Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte - there are no conditions to obtain a suspension of the Schengen treaty, a draconian measure with respect to the needs of the contagion".

  1. While Italy faces the most serious emergency since the post-war period, Salvini proposes to dishearten the Conte government.

This is just crazy and irresponsible. It took a month of close negotiations to find a political agreement useful for the formation of the previous government.

Now that Renzi has divorced from the Democratic Party, while the 5 Stars are looking for a new leader, nothing suggests that a new return to the polls will be able to express a stable parliamentary majority.
