Coronavirus: farmers mobilized to feed circus animals

Hunger alarm due to the coronavirus emergency for hundreds of tigers, lions, hippos, elephants, horses and camels left without sustenance due to the forced blocking of movements and circus shows. This was announced by Coldiretti which mobilized with the adoption by farmers who brought emergency food rations from milk to vegetables, from meat to fruit but also hay and straw throughout the peninsula, from Friuli to Sicily.

In Sicily alone there are 6 realities in difficulty for which the farmers' food Marshall plan was triggered: the exotic Aquatic Circus in Mazara del Vallo, Sandra Orfei in Caltanissetta, Happy Circus in Castelvetrano, Circo Lamar in Caltagirone, Circo Torres in Campobello di Licata and Darix Martini in Santa Teresa Riva. In the last week they have been donated tons of hay and meat and tons of various products including feed, milk, eggs, vegetables to feed the animals. Parcels of food aid with fruit and vegetable scraps were also taken to the circuses blocked in Friuli in Latisana and in Tuscany in Arezzo

Under the awnings of the Italian caravans - explains Coldiretti on Censis data - there are tigers, lions, camels, elephants, hippos, horses, donkeys, dogs, ostriches, giraffes, rhinos and zebras. Throughout Italy there are at least 70 active realities that carry on a centuries-old tradition - explains Coldiretti - with the management of almost two thousand animals that must be looked after every day. The situation of the world of traveling entertainment, no longer thriving for years, has become dramatic with the coronavirus emergency due to the impossibility of working, with the loss of any type of income but with the need to continue to bear most of the ordinary expenses of management, including those for animals that cost over 2,7 million euros a year for food alone.

Bringing food to the animals of the circus - concludes Coldiretti - means helping the families of circus artists who live and work with those same animals thanks to shows that entertain each year and bring moments of serenity to over a million people between adults and children.
