The meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas is underway: the denuclearization of the North is also on the table - Kim: "We are at point zero of a new era of peace" - The appointment, however, is only a preamble to the meeting scheduled for June : the one between the North Korean dictator and Donald Trump

Koreas, a new story begins: summit meeting

Historic summit between the leaders of the two Koreas. At 9.30 local time (2.30 in the morning in Italy) the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and the South Korean president Moon Jae-in they met in Panmunjom, a border village where the armistice between the two countries was signed in 1953, confirming the division of the peninsula. It is no coincidence that the two leaders have pledged to transform the 2018 armistice into a real peace treaty by 1953. This is foreseen in the joint declaration signed by leaders Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un.

"A new story begins now: we are at the zero point of a new era of peace”, wrote Kim in the visitor book, thus becoming the first Pyongyang leader to trespass on South Korean territory.

In addition to improving relations between the two Koreas, the summit aims to initiate dialogue on the point that is most dear to the international community, with the United States in the lead: the denuclearization of the North. All this, of course, in preparation for themeeting between Kim and US President Donald Trumpscheduled for early June.

Yesterday Moon said he was certain that Kim would be ready to offer the renunciation of nuclear power without setting any conditions. However, the most skeptics doubt that the North Korean dictator, despite having stopped atomic tests, will thus easily relinquish the most important lever of power at its disposal.

After the first two hours of talks, the two leaders had lunch separately, each on his side of the 38th parallel. In the afternoon, Kim will cross the border again for other trust-building events, including a walk.

Soon after, the dialogue will resume with a view to signing a joint statement and the final dinner hosted by Moon. Many observers expect a heartfelt but fairly general message on the commitment to peace and the reunification of Korea, perhaps a vague reference to denuclearization.

An unknown factor concerns the presence of the two First Ladies: it could indicate that the top management is abandoning the military dimension to enter the personal one. And that therefore the thaw is destined to continue.
