Korea, sanctions: the UN is holding back the US

US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, announced a draft resolution with new sanctions against North Korea, declaring during the Security Council meeting that the United States aims to obtain a vote on the text next Monday.

Washington wants the United Nations to impose "the harshest possible sanctions measures" on Pyongyang in response to its sixth nuclear test. The actions of the North Korean regime show that "it is begging for war", "our patience is not infinite", added the ambassador.

Russia and China, on the other hand, insist on the path of diplomacy: "We will never allow chaos and war on the Korean peninsula", declared the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi.

"There is a need for coolness and above all to continue along the path of negotiations to resolve the crisis on North Korea's nuclear and missile program - added the Russian ambassador to the Glass Palace, Vassily Nebenzia - There is an urgent need for keep a cool head and refrain from actions that may cause further escalation of tension”.

Moscow supports Beijing's proposal for a freeze on North Korea's nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a suspension of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. A condition which, however, Washington is not willing to accept.

Haley even spoke of an "insult", because "North Korea effectively slapped the international community in the face, which asked it to stop. The crisis goes far beyond the United Nations: the United States will look at all countries that do business with North Korea as countries that support its nuclear program".
