Korea, nuclear site accident: 200 dead

A tunnel at the Punggye-ri nuclear site in North Korea collapsed on October 10, resulting in the deaths of about 200 people. This was reported by the South Korean agency Yonhap, according to which the accident occurred during the excavation works of another tunnel. The news rekindles fears of the leak of heavy radioactivity.

Punggye-ri is the nuclear site from which the tests requested by Kim Jong-un are often carried out to test the power of your arsenal. The September 3 test was also done here, the sixth Kim wanted, the first since Donald Trump has been president. Japanese TV has released the news that the accident was caused by the weakening of the surrounding ground caused by the September test, which caused the earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale recorded immediately after. In the following days numerous aftershocks were felt and it was feared that the site could suffer damage.

According to Yonhap however, the collapses - the first one was followed by another, during the rescue operations - were caused by the expansion works of the site. The North Koreans are allegedly building new underground tunnels to move the test site a few kilometers, but the structure would have been weakened by nuclear explosions and would not have tolerated the new excavations.
