Surprising Italian Cup: Juve out, Rome sinks

Sensational Italian Cup: Juve harakiri in Bergamo and make up for their first flat defeat of the season against Atalanta who eliminate them from the tournament and qualify for the semi-finals by clearly winning by 3 to 0. Hero of the evening with a Duvan Zapata brace but good part of Atalanta's success is due to three glaring mistakes by the Juventus defence, without Bonucci and then also Chiellini.

Even more sensational, due to its size, was the debacle of Roma who even lost 7 to 1 in Florence with three goals from Federico Chiesa and two from Simeone.

That it was a bad evening for Juve – which forced them to abdicate the throne of the Italian Cup after 4 years – was soon understood when, after the first half hour, Chiellini was injured. The departure of the captain forced Allegri, then expelled for protesting, to revolutionize the defense by sending Cancelo onto the field. But, unlike last Sunday against Lazio where he had propitiated the victorious comeback, Oghese made one mistake after another and above all the one that allowed Atalanta to take the lead through Castagne. Shortly after, the players from Bergamo doubled up with a great shot by Zapata, thanks to the uncertainty of Sczcesny.

Juve's reaction was inconsistent in the second half and ended up getting another goal from Zapata, this time propitiated by a sensational mistake by De Sciglio, who was moved to central defense after Chiellini's exit, who complained of a dangerous injury in his calf.

Allegri's comment at the end was realistic: "We were a bit exhausted, especially mentally, but it's human that after so many victories, a defeat can sometimes come".

Even more mortifying was the elimination from the Italian Cup remedied by Rome in Florence in front of a disconsolate Totti. Fiorentina was overwhelming and literally tore the Giallorossi to pieces, winning widely by 7 to 1 with Chiesa and Simeone being great goalscorers.

Fiorentina and Atalanta will face each other in the semifinals of the Italian Cup while now Milan, who have equally sensationally eliminated Napoli, are waiting to know who they will have to face between Inter and Lazio, who challenge each other tomorrow evening at the San Siro in a white-hot duel.
