Conte: "Avoid infringement procedure, but let's not change line"

The debate on the infringement procedure which, after theat the proposal of the commission and the first go-ahead from the Eurogroup, Ecofin could be given to Italy on 9 July. The Minister of Economy, Giovanni Tria, and the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte have repeatedly affirmed the will of our country to "avoid it at all costs". Intention reaffirmed by the Premier also during the communications to the Chamber of Deputies on the EU Council scheduled for 20-21 June: "As regards the issue of the infringement procedure - Conte declared - I was able to state, even publicly, that we are all determined to avoid it but also that we are convinced of our economic policy. On these bases, we intend to maintain a constructive dialogue with the European Union, and I am clearly representing this determination and willingness of ours also to the top institutional leaders of the Union and to my counterparts”.

Conte said he was against "divisive decisions" at the Eurosummit on the possible infringement procedure, also clarifying that "We do not believe that there are the right conditions in this regard".

Words spoken just as the Government is meeting to prepare a response to the many doubts raised by Brussels: "Italy - continued the Premier - intends to respect the European rules, without this preventing it from, as a founding country and the third largest economy on the continent , we also do bearers of an incisive reflection on how to adapt the rules themselves so that the Union is equipped to deal with systemic and global financial crises and ensures an effective balance between stability and growth and between risk reduction and risk sharing. These pairings – remarked the head of government – are complementary and not in conflict with each other as the supporters of a procedural approach continue to maintain which has forced Europe to criticize its own decisions and measures ex post which are then the European citizens who have paid and to risk paying in perspective. This entails a very high price not only for the social and economic cohesion of entire Member States, but for the very credibility of the European project, a credibility that the proponents of austerity to the bitter end declare, at least in words, to have at heart " .

Conte is answered remotely by the president of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, who reiterates from the Sintra forum: "It is important to respect the rules however complex they may be" bearing in mind however that the rules themselves contain "elements of flexibility".

The Premier also spoke on the appointments that will be at the center of the next EU Council asking for a leading economic commissioner for Italy. According to the head of government "it is of fundamental importance that from this confrontation a signal emerges to citizens about the ability to take into account the demand for change" that emerged from the European elections. Conte then claimed to want a top-of-the-line affordable wallet in the next EU commission in order to initiate the change requested by citizens and to implement growth policies that are no longer antithetical to stability, as in the past.
