Electricity consumption: signs of recovery in December

After months of difficulty due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data provided by Terna, in December electricity consumption increased by 1,1% compared to the same month in 2019 and by 0,3% compared to November 2020 .

Electricity consumption in recovery at the end of the year after the difficult months experienced due to the Covid-19 emergency and the consequent lockdowns. According to data provided by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, in December 2020 the demand for electricity stood at 25,9 billion kWh, a value in growth of 1,1% compared to December 2019 and by 0,3% compared to November 2020. Renewable sources they covered 32% of the requirement. 

Encouraging signals also come fromIMCEI index developed by Terna, which monitors the industrial consumption of around 530 so-called energy-intensive customers connected to the national electricity transmission grid. The index recorded a double-digit positive change (+11,4%) compared to December 2019. An increase, for the third consecutive month, also at the economic level compared to November 2020 (+0,4%). The growth was mainly driven by the steel industry (+23,2%) and mechanics (+7%), while the only negative sector was that of construction materials (-2,1%). 

Going forward with the data, in December the Italian electricity demand was met for 87,3% with domestic production, while the remaining portion of the balance, equal to 12,7%, was satisfied through energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22,9 billion kWh) increased by 1,5% compared to December 2019. Thermal production sources (+14%) and geothermal (+3%) grew ). On the other hand, the sources of hydroelectric (-23,1), wind (-17,1%) and photovoltaic (-16,2%) production recorded a new decline.

A geographical level, all Italian territories closed December with a plus sign: +0,8% in the North and Centre, and +1,9% in the South and Islands.

“Separately analyzing the so-called pure customers (those that exclusively withdraw from the network) and self-producers, the tendential variation shows an increase of 11,1% and 13,7 percent respectively”, concludes Terna.
