In January 2019, according to data from Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, the demand for electricity in Italy was 28,4 billion kWh, an increase of 4,3% compared to the same month of 2018. The trend in demand was mainly affected by the temperature effect: this year, in fact, on the same working days (22) January recorded an average monthly temperature 3°C lower than in January 2018. The seasonally adjusted figure corrected for the effects of temperature and calendar, leads to a change in January electricity demand of +1,9%.
At a territorial level, the trend change in January 2019 was positive everywhere: +3,1% in the North, +5,7% in the Center and + 6,2% in the South
In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value of electricity required in January 2019 adjusted for calendar and temperature effects recorded, for the second consecutive month, a positive change (+0,9%) compared to the previous month (December 2018 ). This result brings the trend profile to a slightly increasing trend.
In January 2019 the demand for electricity was 90,1% satisfied with national production and for the remainder (9,9%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (25,8 billion kWh) increased by 13% compared to January 2018. Sources of geothermal (+0,6%), water (+2,2%), photovoltaic (+3,8%), thermal (+15,2%) and wind (+16,9%).
