CONSULTATIONS – Napolitano's appointment expected for tomorrow: Bersani ready to withdraw

“There is a need for government and for change. These two terms are inseparable and I think the word change can be described as follows: immediate attention is expected to the most serious social issues, a decisive initiative on the moralisation of public life and finally serious steps on institutional reforms”. This was stated by the leader of the Democratic Party, Pier Luigi Bersani, at the end of the consultations with the Head of State, Giorgio Napolitano, who confirmed that tomorrow he will make a decision on the mandate to be entrusted.

“We, the Democratic Party – continued Bersani -, are the first strength of this country, whatever anyone says. And we place ourselves at the service of this need of Italy and Europe. There are two sides: there is a need for a government that presents precise proposals to Parliament for the start of the legislature in the key to change. If we talk about social issues, we need to open a serious European table on fundamental issues: an investment plan for the Municipalities; correction of labor market rules, to address precariousness; green economy; payments to businesses.

The leader of the Democratic Party then underlined that "if we talk about moralizing public life, we mean sobriety of politics, market rules and anti-corruption: I believe that the Government must deal with these other things, giving a signal that things can change profoundly".

The second side, on the other hand, “is that of institutional interventions – Bersani explained again -: electoral reform and modification of the second part of the Constitution, from the reduction of parliamentarians to the Chamber of autonomy. We need to set up mechanisms that make results payable in certain times and that provide for the co-responsibility of all parliamentary forces ".

As for the government solution, “I believe and hope I can lend a hand. No one can think that I have personal goals. I, like my party, feel I have a responsibility towards this country. A government that does not have the possibility to give a sign of change would not be the solution, it would lead the country nowhere. We are addressing the whole parliament: of course we are also talking about reforms that have been blocked by the right in the past, even in the last year. But on institutional issues, of course we talk to everyone. These points that we propose are not a run-up to anyone: it is our proposal for change”.
