Consob, M5S-Lega tug of war: Minenna or Masciandaro

Two months after the stormy exit of Mario Nava, too independent to be appreciated by the government in office, the battle between the Lega and Cinque Stelle for the appointment of the new president of Consob could end this week. But for now it is a tug of war between the two majority shareholders of the pentastellato government.

The Five Stars make no secret of wanting as the new number one of Consob, Marcello Minenna, head of the Authority's Quantitative Analysis Office, former councilor of the Giunta Raggi in Rome and author of various public essays in which he minimized the costs of leaving the Italy from the euro. Above all, the president of the Finance and Treasury Commission of the Chamber, the grillina Carla Ruocco, with whom he is linked by very close personal relationships, is fighting for him. But that's not to say it's enough.

The League would prefer presidents of a much different caliber and has put two bona fide Bocconians on the track: in the first instance, it tried to support the appointment of Alberto Dell'Acqua, professor of financial management, but, given the difficulties, it now seems to bet, to vetoes of the Five Stars, on an even more authoritative candidacy such as that of Donato Masciandaro, Full Professor of Political Economy at Bocconi, an expert in financial regulation and monetary policy highly respected in the Bank of Italy and the ECB and a longtime columnist for Sole 24 Hours.

The appointment of the new president of Consob will also be a very important signal for the markets and for the European Union. By choosing Minenna, the government would put an internal manager who makes no secret of his Eurosceptic positions at the head of the Authority that supervises the Stock Exchange, while, in the candidacy of Masciandaro, an academic with proven experience and sure faith in the single currency would be chosen. Without saying that the signature of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who has never hidden his full support for the euro, also hangs over the final nomination.
