Coni, Malagò confirmed as president

Giovanni Malagò as number one in Italian sport is a Bulgarian re-election: the outgoing CONI president has in fact largely been confirmed at the helm of the national Olympic committee, with 67 votes out of 75 eligible, while two were the preferences for the challenger Sergio Grifoni, five blank ballots and one void. The team is completed with Franco Chimenti (deputy) and Alessandra Sensini as vice presidents, while Roberto Fabbricini as general secretary and Carlo Mornati as vice president are confirmed.

“The balance of my mandate – said Malagò – demonstrates that 4/5 of the 2013 program has been realised. What was missing did not depend on Coni's responsibility. In these four years, we have transformed the medical institute, the science institute, the sports school; we have set up the reform of sports justice, even if we can perfect it; we have made our fight against doping credible on an international level, today a model to be imitated; we have won the trust of the Government, which has given us one hundred million a year for sport in the suburbs; we have achieved impressive sporting results, we are a giant”.

What was missing, in addition to the assignment of the Rome 2024 Olympics (on which, however, Malagò hinted that he could return to office in the future: "Whoever is the president of an important and prestigious Olympic Committee like the Italian one must never give up to the Olympic dream"), is sport at school: "Chilling data, we are bringing up the rear – admits the president of Coni -. We have put our face on it, with all the ministries. In four years I have met six prime ministers, ministers and undersecretaries. Also thanks to the work of Francesco Soro, we have always made ourselves respected".
