Confindustria and Pasini's imprudent candidacy: what's behind it

The cold candidacy of the president of the Brescian industrialists, Giuseppe Pasini, at the helm of Confindustria dies in the bud but hides the objective of crippling the candidacy of Bonomi of Assolombarda, unwelcome to the Roman Confindustria bureaucracy

Confindustria and Pasini's imprudent candidacy: what's behind it

The provincial euphoria of Brescia for the announcement lasted less than a week candidacy of Giuseppe Pasini for the Presidency of Confindustria. A candidacy expressed, suddenly, at the end of a Council of the territorial association of Brescian industrialists, by applause, outside of any rules in terms of times and methods, but, above all, thrown away without a real alliance strategy essential to contend Viale dell'Astronomia. Why such a cold gesture, in times still far from May 2020, without even the procedures envisaged by the statutory baroqueism of Confindustria having been started? Already the reactions registered in the city have measured the weakness of the candidacy. In fact, the few judgments expressed by entrepreneurs in the press allow us to glimpse a road full of pitfalls. The President of the Chamber of Commerce calls for prudence and caution; while the Brescian entrepreneur Marco Bonometti, president of the industrialists of Lombardy, replies almost angrily to Pasini's candidacy: “I was working to build a unity of proposal among the Lombard associations and instead…”.

On the eve of the assembly of Assolombarda, at La Scala in Milan, with a parterre of great weight and prestige gathered alongside the President of the Republic, the gesture from Brescia ended up underlining a hostility towards Carlo Bonomi who appears to be the real candidate capable of measuring himself against the candidacies of Veneto or Emilia. The Association that brings together Milan, Legnano and Brianza did not fail to censure the pace of the Brescian colleagues as untimely and inopportune.

The question remains why such a hasty decision and above all completely devoid of an indicative message capable of mobilizing a vast consensus in the territories, in the categories and among the entrepreneurs. The more informed whisper of a trap put on the presidential aspirations of Giuseppe Pasini who chose to put his foot in it but, in truth, more aimed at dividing the Lombard and Northern camps in favor of candidatures manipulated by the leaders of the confederal bureaucracy, made stronger and more maneuverable under the opaque presidency of Vincenzo Boccia. An agency kept secret from the Brescian press clearly mentions the name of Marcella Panucci, the powerful director of Viale dell'Astronomia. A new and authoritative entrepreneurial presidency, an expression of the manufacturing, processing and exporting north, would bring about profound changes in the associative structure, in Luiss and in the Sole 24 Ore. Nor would he delegate to his bureaucracy the influence on the numerous and strategic appointments that await most of the companies with public capital, strategic for the country's economy and, no less, essential for the Confindustria budget itself.

Giuseppe Pasini lent himself to feed this scenario and, in the end, will be indicated how responsible for the attempt to cripple Bonomi's candidacy. On the other hand, even the Brescian euphoria didn't last long. The illusion of duplicating the story of Luigi Lucchini showed how the history of the iron industrialist and his deep-rooted presence in the industrial and political events of Italy in those years was neither read nor meditated on with due realism and necessary capacity. A turnover is not enough and not even the "big bird" in the buttonhole! We need that much more that Brescia lacked this time.
